Why it's buy-it-for-life
A pair from the 1980s is still intact after decades of use and repeated repairs, and a commenter describes farm coveralls of similar age surviving years of hard labor — Carhartt duck overalls are treated as armor against grease, dirt, and sharp work hazards.

made to last, sure, but also a stitch in time saves nine there. take care of your gear.

I think these were made to last in the sense that they were not allowed to die.
1980s carhartt jacket and overalls that I found at a church sale and absolutely loved
if it held up it wouldn't be completely made out of patches right?
Those look like they barely contain any original material. Just scraps and threads held together with patches and adhesive.
Survivorship bias
I have two jackets and a set of coveralls of similar age. All been through hell working on the farm.
