Why it's buy-it-for-life
Multiple owners report the boots splitting at the sole or upper after light use, sometimes just outside the 1-year warranty window, with Merrell customer service declining to help; a few owners report years of trouble-free wear from the same boot.

They made excellent boots a long time ago. This was the late 90s I had a pair I wore daily for a couple years until they needed resoling.

the toe creases on the inside split on both boots the first time out... Merrill wouldn't help me because I'd owned them for too long.

I've had the exact same boot for 4 years and hiked/walked my dog in it plenty without an issue.

Less than an hour into my hike, the upper split on me... due to my date of purchase, the 1-year warranty had expired.
I had some of their sneakers fall apart in less than 7 days, absolute garbage now.
the modern ones I've bought have been awful. I noticed that a seam has gone in my pair.
Supposedly waterproof trail runners that fail far before one would expect them to.
every single pair I've bought seems to fall apart in ways that indicate cheap construction and corner cutting run rampant.
Fiance's Merrells fell apart as well
