Japanese-made dressmaking shears from Kai, used for cutting fabric.

Why it's buy-it-for-life

Praised as sharper and better-built than Fiskars scissors, with razor-sharp performance for fabric cutting. Other buyers say the shears can be professionally sharpened rather than replaced when they dull, and single out the Kai 5210 8-inch Dressmaking Shears (~$20, made in Japan) as a fantastic buy for both fabric and paper cutting.

What owners say

Commenters recommending Kai shears in this thread say they're 'definitely BIFL since they are able to be sharpened,' rather than needing to be thrown out, and describe buying pairs directly from Kai's website when on sale. One names the Kai 5210 8-inch Dressmaking Shears specifically — about $20, made in Japan — calling them fantastic.

I have enjoyed using my Kai dressmaker shears and paper specific scissors. They are definitely BIFL since they are able to be sharpened.

I recently bought a pair of Kai dressmaking shears. Now those are a proper pair of scissors. Build quality is much better. And they are razor sharp
